Konoha (WIP concept)

Project: Art direction, brand identity refresh, OOH advertising, apparel design

Client: Personal project

Brand refresh spec project for fictional rural Japanese village Konoha (translates to “Village Hidden in the Leaves”). Scope of work included brand identity, merchandise and apparel design, wayfinding, and out-of-home (OOH) advertising. The goal of the project was to promote tourism and provide a modernized, future-focused brand identity within the village. Merchandise sold at sporting events and tourist stores will support the local economy and will reflect the new brand personality by integrating vibrant colours inspired by the rural landscape (foliage, rivers, the open sky, etc) with traditional Japanese minimalism and an emphasis on calligraphy and typographic elements.

Typography

I drew inspiration from traditional Japanese calligraphy and modern typography. The colour palette was inspired by nature in rural Japan, but made more vibrant for a modern twist.

Logo inspiration & ideation

The first symbol (below, left) is the current logo and symbol used for Konoha. The middle symbol is used as a secondary logo and symbolizes the "Will of Fire", a central philosophy in the village that sees the population as one family and that the inhabitants should fight to protect it.

The primary logo (bottom left) is an abstract graphic of a leaf (from the meaning of the name of the village). Using an image of a leaf as reference, I searched for ways to incorporate leaf imagery, and, possibly, the "Will of Fire" symbol in the new logo.
